Location: Vault 288 — Residential Quarters
I finally sat down and read the holotape Samson Reed gave me: Facility Guidebook & Technological Overview.
It wasn't a maintenance manual.
It was a blueprint for how Vault-Tec believed society should function.
The deeper I read, the more I realized this vault wasn't built simply to protect people. It was built to shape them. Housing, work, food, education—even culture—had been carefully engineered to keep order. One sentence stayed with me longer than the rest:
"A stomach that remembers home forgets rebellion."
That explained the barbecue.
It wasn't just tradition.
It was part of the design.
Reading the guidebook changed how I see this place. I don't believe Overseer Lillie Jacinto or her family created these systems. They're inheriting them, maintaining them, trying to keep people alive inside a machine built by someone else.
That's a heavy thing to carry.
A person can inherit a structure without inheriting its purpose.
I understand Samson a little better now, too. He didn't explain the vault. He handed me the truth and trusted me to read it for myself.
Tonight I'll begin preparing to leave Vault 288. The Pip-Boy is becoming second nature, my pack is nearly ready, and the stories I've heard about the surface are no longer enough.
Soon, I'll have to see the Wasteland with my own eyes.
